What are Plankton Nets?

How is a Plankton Net operated?

You need to insert a small can inside the rim of the nylon stocking being used. You would usually need to use the string provided in order to hold the can in place. You can use any method but you have to ensure that the can is in place firmly, enough to be suspended in the water, and carry some weight as well. However, you already have these strings attached and secured in place to make things easier for you. You then have to drop an uncovered test tube at the end of the stocking.

The plankton size in the plankton nets can be between 0.05 and 1mm. So, it will be around 0.002 and 0.04 inches. Usually, it consists of microscopic organisms that cling on by a net of number 25 mesh silk bolting cloth. Also, nanoplankton (51/1000 mm to 60/1000 mm) is the smallest one, and they are single-cellular animals. Then, there is microplankton (61/1000 mm to 1 mm), mainly the eggs and larvae of invertebrates. And the other one is macroplankton (over 1 mm) which contains copepods and amphipods.

How do you clean a plankton net?

Remove all debris after each sampling session. Before storing, carefully rinse in clean water and let the air dry entirely. Air drying should be done outside of a closet. But you can do it in a dimly lit or shaded room with good air circulation. It is necessary to keep the nets clean and away from debris. So try to wash and air dry them as soon as possible, the same day. Here’s how you can do it-

• Wash out sticks and stains as soon as possible if complete cleaning is impossible. Also, the nets may mildew if you store them moist.
• You may use a mild detergent to remove the mildew and keep the net clean and away from damage.
• Besides, gently using isopropyl alcohol, vinegar, or dishwasher detergent can help to clear the debris and stains from the net.
• Keep the nets clean and dry before storing them. And it is advisable to cover it with brown paper or opaque cloth and keep it on an open shelf.
• So the ideal storage of the plankton is a cold, dark, and well-ventilated place.
